Special Education
The demand for educators with expertise in teaching students with special needs has never been greater. The College of Education offers several programs geared to improving the impact you can have on your students — those with disabilities, those who are gifted and talented, and all learners in between.
What to Expect
Programs include certification and endorsement programs, a B.A. program, master’s degrees and a Ph.D. program. You will be able to specialize in many different areas of special education, including multicategorical, severe and multiple, behavior analysis, leadership and more.
If you are seeking to become a special education teacher and are not yet a certified teacher, you will be interested in the B.A. or M.A.T. in Special Education. Current teachers looking to add special education certification complete the M.Ed. in Special Education.
Undergraduate Degrees
The B.A. in Special Education provides students the knowledge and skills to positively impact the lives of students with diverse needs. Graduates become highly qualified special educators prepared to work in schools as multicategorical special education teachers at all grade levels. This program provides the expertise to work with students with various disabilities, including students with mild intellectual disabilities, learning disabilities and emotional behavior disorders.
The following courses fulfill some of the requirements for a special education degree:
- Issues and Trends in Teaching and Learning
- Learners and the Diversity of Learning
- Introduction to Students with Autism
- Nature of Students with Multi-Categorical Disabilities
- Instruction of Students with Multi-Categorical Disabilities

Graduate Degrees
Our College of Education offers three distinct graduate programs in special education. The M.A.T. is primarily for those with an undergraduate degree outside of education who are seeking to become a licensed special education teacher. The M.Ed. program is designed for certified teachers looking for special education certification or additional licensure, while the Ph.D. prepares students to become special education teacher educators or administrators.
