
Mass Communications
Do you know you want a career in communications, but aren’t sure which avenue to take? Do you see yourself working in media using a variety of skills to create content or to deliver information through different mediums? Through our undergraduate curriculum, you will gain a broad understanding of media and develop skills to be a well-rounded communicator.
What to Expect
Mass Communications majors can expect to learn the basics of the communication industry as well as have the ability to choose from classes in other journalism fields such as print, broadcast, visual communications, public relations and advertising.
You will be prepared to work in a multitude of industries or continue on to graduate or law school.
Undergraduate Degree
B B.A. in Journalism and Mass Communications
The Mass Communications program is housed in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications, which is nationally accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications. The following courses are typical for a major in mass communications:
- Minorities, Women and the Mass Media
- Media Criticism
- Public Opinion and Persuasion
- Freedom, Responsibility and Ethics of the Mass Media
You will also have the opportunity to graduate with leadership distinction with a pathway of global learning, community service, civic engagement, research and writing, or diversity and social advocacy.

Graduate Degrees
The School of Journalism and Mass Communications offers both a Master of Arts in Journalism and a Master of Mass Communication as well as a dual program with the School of Law. Students can also pursue a Ph.D. in Mass Communication.

Through special arrangement, the university offers dual degree programs in certain areas to permit a student to work on two degrees concurrently by combining credits, resulting in the student taking fewer courses than the total required if each degree were pursued independently.
This program, offered by the School of Journalism and Mass Communications and the School of Law, culminates in a Master of Mass Communication in Journalism and a Juris Doctor.
