Gift of Body

Housed in the Department of Cell Biology and Anatomy, the Gift of Body Program is for individuals wishing to participate in the noble and time-honored practice of donating their bodies to advance scientific discovery after their death.

2023 Gift of Body Memorial Service

The ceremony will be held at the Bible Way Church of Atlas Road on Sat., April 15, 2023.  The purpose of this brief, non-denominational, memorial service is to enable our students to pay their final respects and show their appreciation for the great service which their first patients have provided.

You may watch the service on the Bible Way Church streaming page at the link below.

Gift of Body Program

This program began in the 1970's as our fledgling medical school began the process of training health professionals to serve the people of South Carolina.

We are proud to say that the citizens of our state have been very generous contributors; with a current database of over 3,200 (future) donors, the Gift of Body Program has far exceeded our original expectations. The majority of cadavers obtained through the program go to the Gross Anatomy Lab to be used by first-year Medical Students at the School of Medicine for educational purposes.

Our donor bodies are treated with the utmost respect, and then cremated and interred at the Donor Memorial Garden. Enrollment in the basic program allows for return of the donor ashes (upon request) at the end of the 1-4 year “study period."

Why Should I Enroll

Your participation in this program helps enhance our medical students education by giving them the hands-on experience they need to enrich their skills and improve future patient outcomes. You can learn more about the program through our frequently asked questions
