The Bridge to the Doctorate Fellowship Program is committed to engaging students from underrepresented populations in graduate study within science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields of study in the College of Arts & Sciences (CAS) and Engineering & Computing (CEC).
Open to prospective and current doctoral and MFA students, this program prepares underrepresented minority students to become professors. Scholars are provided $40,000 in additional funding over 4 years and receive training specifically designed to help them diversify the professoriate.
Designed to impact both the academic and ethnic diversity across the University, the Presidential Fellowship awards doctoral students with $40,000 in additional funding over 4 years ($25,000 over 5 semesters for MFA students). Fellows are part of an engaged community and participate in an innovative progression of seminars and professional development workshops.
The Rising Star Fellowship provides funding to HBCU students interested in pursuing Master's or Doctoral level degrees at UofSC. Rising Star Fellows receive full tuition and fees, as well as a full health insurance subsidy and annual stipend.
These one-time (non-renewable) awards are given to current graduate students in memory of individuals who influenced particular fields of study and the University of South Carolina during their lifetimes.
Awarded to graduate students demonstrating leadership on campus, in their academic discipline or in the community.

Awarded to individuals who have completed dissertations representing original work that makes a significant contribution to the discipline. Individuals awarded are nominated for the national CGS/ProQuest Distinguished Dissertation Award.
Awarded to graduate students who have shown themselves to be exceptional graduate instructors or instructional assistants.
Awarded to Ph.D. or Master’s students who have conducted research in the academic year that is vital to their academic discipline and society at large.

As a GEM Member University, we partner with industry leaders to provide underrepresented minorities in the STEM fields with internships at major companies and entirely lift the financial burden of attending graduate school.
We partner with the SREB to provide full tuition abatement and additional funding for underrepresented minority students who are interested in becoming professors. Two types of awards are available: one students at the start of their doctoral program and one for students entering their final year of dissertation work.
The college or school that houses your program can be a good place to find generous fellowships. In most cases, students must be nominated by their department to qualify. Ask in particular about teaching fellowships and dean's fellowships.
