School Library Certification

Interested in becoming a school librarian? Our program prepares students to work and teach in school libraries across the country. Students who complete our program are eligible to be certified and approved by the S.C. Department of Education. Students who plan to teach in other states should check certification requirements and talk to their faculty advisor.

Program Requirements

If you’re not already a certified teacher, you’ll need to take the core 36 hours plus 15 more hours, which include a second internship and four education courses.

If you’re already a certified teacher, you’ll need to take the core 36 hours, which includes one internship.

The capstone experience includes a final class in school library program development, as well as an internship and a portfolio based on all coursework.

Internships

If you’re currently certified as a teacher, you’ll need one internship in a school library. If you’re not, you’ll need two internships, one in an elementary school and one in a secondary school.

Previous work in a library does not count as an internship.

Details regarding the internship requirements will be provided as students advance through the program.

Getting Certified

You’ll need to apply for initial certification about a year in advance of starting an internship. This process includes an FBI background check.

If you’re already a certified teacher, you’ll need to apply for advanced certification about two to three months before graduation.
