Dr. Huebner is currently a Professor in the School Psychology Program in the Department of Psychology at the University of South Carolina (USC) where he has served three terms as Program Director. He received his Ph.D. from Indiana University in 1983. Prior to coming to the USC in 1990, he worked as a school psychologist in Iowa and Indiana as well as a staff therapist in a community mental health center. Additionally, he served as an assistant and associate professor and Director of the Psychoeducational Clinic at Western Illinois University. He has served as Project Director and Co-Principal Investigator on federally funded pupil personnel training grants and Project Evaluator on federally funded mental health programs.
His current scholarly interests include:
- Child and adolescent personality assessment
- Children's positive psychological well-being (e.g., life satisfaction)
- Student engagement in school
- School climate
Dr. Huebner is a Fellow in the American Psychological Association, International Positive Psychology Association, and the International Society for Quality of Life Studies and as well as an elected member of the Society for the Study of School Psychology. He is also the 1996 recipient of the award for Outstanding Contributions to School Psychology from the South Carolina Association of School Psychologists and the 1999 recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Indiana University College of Education.
Dr. Huebner has served on the editorial boards of school psychology journals (e.g., Journal of School Psychology, School Psychology Review), and positive psychology/quality of life journals (e.g., Journal of Happiness Studies, Applied Quality of Life Research) as well as the NASP Communique.
He has published more than 260 scholarly works in his career to date, including more than 100 works with students. His publications have appeared in journals in psychology, school psychology, general education, special education, public health, medicine, measurement, and interdisciplinary fields (quality of life studies). He has been identified as among the "Top 5" most productive scholars in the school psychology community for several decades. His research has been cited more than 20, 000 times (Google scholar h-index=75).
Dr. Huebner was a co-editor of the 2009 book, Handbook of Positive Psychology in the Schools (with Rich Gilman and Mike Furlong). A second edition was published in 2014. He was also featured in the APA (Division 16) 2008 Conversation Series DVD entitled "Positive Psychology in the Schools" (also with Rich Gilman and Mike Furlong).
Recent Research with Students
Dr. Huebner welcomes students as part of his research team on children's well-being. He has chaired more than 50 dissertations and theses. His work with students has been recognized through teaching awards at the University of South Carolina and Western Illinois University. The quality of his research mentoring at the graduate level has been demonstrated through the success of his students in terms of obtaining faculty positions (e.g., University of Michigan, University of Kentucky, University of South Florida, University of Virginia) as well earning awards for their own scholarly contributions (e.g., APA Division 16 Lightner Witmer Award, journal editorships). His students have obtained APA internships and postdoctoral positions (e.g., Johns Hopkins, Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles) and all students have all received matches. His students have excelled locally as well. For example, his students have won numerous awards through the USC Graduate School.
