Signature Lectures

Solomon-Tenenbaum Visiting Lectureship in Jewish Studies

The Solomon-Tenenbaum Lecture series features distinguished scholars and experts recognized for their research and study of Jewish culture and civilization across the ages. From the ancient period to the modern era, the series incites thoughtful discussion on Jewish history, philosophy, religion, literature and politics, and aims to promote an understanding of the global impact of Judaism that spans over 3,000 years of history. The series is made possible by the late Melvin and Judith Solomon, and Samuel and Inez Tenenbaum. This lecture is free and open to the public.

Nadine Beacham and Charlton F. Hall, Sr. Visiting Lectureship

The Nadine Beacham and Charlton F. Hall, Sr. Visiting Lectureship brings together the brightest scholars of New Testament and Early Christianity, the general public and the local church community to inspire the study of Early Christian literature and history, and to foster reflection on the moral issues facing our nation. This lecture was established by Columbia businessman Charlton F. Hall, Jr., in memory of his father, Charlton F. Hall, Sr., and his mother Nadine Beacham Hall. In the words of Charlton F. Hall, Jr., “By annually bringing to the university community a well-known religious leader or scholar, it is my hope to enhance the moral and spiritual well-being of the individual and promote peace and good will among men.” This lecture is free and open to the public.

Townsend Lecture

The Townsend Lecture topic alternates annually between the impact of biological sciences on society and culture in the South from a refined perspective of southern literature, classical music, fine arts and theater. Presented annually, the Townsend Lecture is made possible by the late Dr. J. Ives Townsend, ‘41, in honor of his parents Joel Ives Townsend, ’11 and Emma Chiles Cothran Townsend, and grandparents Robert Wallace Townsend who attended USC in 1883-1884 and Amelia Dalton Carter Townsend. This lecture is free and open to the public.
