The Division of Law Enforcement and Safety is made up of three main bureaus: Operations, Support Services and Administration and Emergency Management. The men and women of these bureaus work around the clock to keep our campus safe and secure.
Operations is the largest and most visible bureau and is responsible for traditional policing functions. Our patrol officers provide uniformed police presence and respond to calls for service 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Our criminal investigators and crime scene technicians are responsible for investigating crimes and processing scenes for evidence. Our Crime Suppression Unit is a data-driven team that targets current crime trends and problems. The mission of our crime prevention unit is to reduce crime and the fear of crime through education and community engagement. Specialized units such as our bike patrol team and victim advocacy are also a part of this bureau.
This bureau consists of the Telecommunications and Technical Operations and Physical Security (TOPS) units.
When you dial 911 or the non-emergency line, our Telecommunications Unit personnel are the people who take your calls. They also provide 24-7 police dispatch and video and alarm monitoring. This includes fire and burglar alarms on USC campuses across the state.
TOPS installs and maintains all alarm systems on campus – this includes burglar, panic and temperature alarms. They also manage an extensive array of internal and external cameras – more than 250 – across all University campuses. Investigators in this unit offer their security expertise during the planning stages of all construction and building projects.
Administration and Emergency Management
The emergency management team plans for and responds to natural and other disasters, working with senior University officials to make sure the campus is protected. The team also collaborates with other University departments during response and recovery. This team is responsible for safety at all University events including concerts, commencements and athletic events.
This administration team handles vital functions such as human resources, finance, records management, crime analysis, evidence and property control, information technology and training and professional development.
